Greater New York Salvation Army Celebrates
Veterans on 80th #NationalDonutDay
Volunteers from Entenmann’s® (Bimbo Bakeries) teamed up with The Salvation Army on #NationalDonutDay, Friday, June 1, 2018, to distribute over 700 doughnuts and other treats to veterans at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx and VA New York Harbor Healthcare System in Manhattan.
Doughnuts for the “Do Good” Donut Parties were provided courtesy of Entenmann’s®, The Salvation Army’s long-standing Donut Day partner, who, in addition to doughnuts, has contributed thousands of dollars to The Salvation Army over the years.
This year marked the 80th Annual National Donut Day, which commemorates the service of the women Salvation Army volunteers — or “Donut Lassies” as they came to be known — who provided clothing, supplies, emotional support, and, of course, doughnuts, to U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. The Salvation Army celebrated the first National Donut Day in Chicago in 1938 to mark this effort, and the commemorative day is held each year on the first Friday in June.
In honor of #NationalDonutDay, please consider making a donation to The Salvation Army in the Greater New York area, which operates more than 100 year-‘round programs and services for adults (including veterans), children and families in need. Visit www.salvationarmyny.org/give or text ‘givingissweet’ to 41444 for a donation link.
